Good Morning my Friends. In honor of Labor Day, I am taking the week off from writing the Workout of the Week Post. I am a little sad that Labor Day is here; it’s the “unofficial end of summer”. The Seasons change, life keeps moving, and we all need to do the same.
What is Labor Day?
Labor Day in the US and Canada is the first Monday of every September. Its history goes back to the early 19th century. You can read more about this holiday on Wikipedia. Contrary to what we know today, Labor Day was not started as a commercial holiday for retail businesses to push big sales events. Labor Day was a movement by the working people and the Labor Unions of our country to gain workers’ rights.
Steinbeck
John Steinbeck’s classic The Grapes Of Wrath was written after Labor Day started, but is the best literature I know that captures what it must have been like being a poor working-class family in that era. If you have never read or listened to this classic novel, you should. I know I ignored it when it was forced on me back in school. However, after revisiting this as an adult, what a great book. If you want to understand why Labor Day exists, read or listen to this book.
